Interns Kept Busy with University of Glamorgan Group 2

April 9th, 2012

The 2nd wave of University of Glamorgan students currently occupying the Gaya Island dive centre

The University of Glamorgan’s second group has been keeping our interns busy on Gaya island in Kota Kinabalu.

The group picks up where the previous group left off and continues collecting data about the coral reefs and seagrass beds around our dive centre.

Our professional interns are gaining plenty of group experience as they handle the logistics and make sure everyone gets in and out of the water just fine.

In the meantime they’ve also had plenty of whale shark action to keep them busy in between.

The next IDC is now just a little over 1 month away, so the interns have their work cut out for them over the next few weeks.

Pro Scuba Internship All Girl Streak Continues in Sabah, Borneo

April 3rd, 2012

The Scuba Sisterhood. And Carl, the Scuba Cat.

When Leanne departed this week, our gaggle of female pro interns were temporarily one woman down. Until, that is, Michelle entered the scene.

Michelle joins the Scuba Sisterhood at our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya island this month with her sights firmly set on becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor during our May IDC.

She fits right in with Sara and Liz who are with Downbelow for the same reason.

Sara, of course, have been around for longer than we can remember, having worked her way up from the open water course she did with us last year when she was on Downbelow’s Borneo Adventure.

Liz, hurtling towards PADI Instructordom, joined us last month form the UK and have made great strides towards her goal.

Are we heading for Downbelow’s first all girl IDC for Downbelow in Sabah, Borneo? Stay tuned to find out.

Divemaster Leanne Bids Farewell to Scuba Diving Internship in Sabah

April 2nd, 2012

Divemaster Leanne with PADI Course Director Richard

Leanne, who joined us at the end of January as a recreational diver, waved goodbye to Downbelow this weekend as a fully qualified PADI Divemaster.

Its hard to believe that 2 months have zoomed passed since Leanne joined us for her professional scuba diving internship at our dive centre in Sabah.

During the past 2 months Leanne have come a long way and blossomed into a consummate PADI professional ready to take on the diving world.

She will take on that world with a top notch PADI qualification, taught at our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre to the highest standards with deep consideration to bring Project AWARE and an awareness of the environment with her into her professional career.

Leanne also takes with her 2 months of solid dive industry experience, which she gained at our busy dive centre that has a constant stream of interesting individuals, families and big groups. Experience like this is hard to get at any dive centre, never mind on an internship – truly one of the benefits of a Downbelow internship.

All said, Leanne will hit the ground running and is about to make the lucky dive centre to employ her very happy with her skills, knowledge and experience.

We wish Leanne the best of luck, but hope to see her again soon when she takes her scuba diving qualifications to the next level to become an PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

Until then, Leanne, best fishes!

Big Group Experience for Professional Intern Liz

March 30th, 2012

The University of Glamorgan Students - Wave 1. Liz Street, pro intern, at the bottom in the middle, loving every minute of it.

One of the value propositions of Downbelow’s professional internships is the opportunity to gain a broad spectrum of invaluable experience, which very few dive centres can offer.

Downbelow has a constant stream of interesting and diverse customers who come to us for anything from a straight-forward day trip to complex multi-day group itineraries, which is, of course, great for interns who are with us for the express purpose to gain experience of all things diving.

The University of Glamorgan is one such group that we’ve recently hosted and professional intern, Liz Street, was knee deep in gaining experience helping out with the group.

The Glam students had specific research tasks they had to complete, which consisted of observing and recording various details of the marine environment, chiefly coral reefs and seagrass beds, around our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre.

Liz was kept busy with logistics, which for a group of 19 divers is no small task.

While group 1 has just departed and Liz, no doubt, has learned a lot, group 2 arrives shortly, giving her the opportunity to put all her newly gained experienced right back into practice.

You go girl!

Fleeting Whale Shark Sighted in Kota Kinablau, Sabah

March 28th, 2012

Earlier in the week we posted about having seen a whale shark over the weekend in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Our resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann, assisted by pro intern Liz Street, was conducting the Fish ID dive of an Adventure Diver course when a pair of whale sharks made an appearance.

David Taylor, one of the University of Glamorgan students, had a camera with him, and managed to snap the picture you see above.

March, traditionally, is the end of the whale shark season, but it’s been such a spectacular whale shark year so far, that we hope it will last a little longer.

Hopefully we’ll have a few more whale shark sightings in Sabah during April.

Here’s hoping!

Pro Intern Assists Adventure Diver Course in Sabah, Borneo

March 26th, 2012

It was a beautiful Sunday yesterday, blue skies, clear water; quite perfect for diving really.

As usual Downbelow’s PADI Course Director Richard Swann was out in the water, this time with 6 divers from the University of Glamorgan group, presenting the PADI Adventure Diver course for them.

By his side was Liz Street, one of Downbelow’s Professional Scuba Diving Interns, assisting on the Adventure Diver course.

The Fish ID dive of the course was quite special. A whaleshark, apparently in an effort to be identified, swam by to say hello.

The remainder of the Glamorgan group, the other 16, who were nearby on a fun dive, also got to see the whaleshark, making it quite a spectacular dive.

Talk about adventure diving.

Liz Street Almost Qualified as a PADI Divemaster in Borneo

March 23rd, 2012

Our newest professional divemaster intern here in Borneo, Liz Street, who joined us a few short weeks ago, is making swift progress towards becoming a PADI Divemaster.

This week she was already conducting her second Discover Scuba Diving program with real clients no less.

Even though the real clients were two of our local interns, she was nevertheless under the watchful eye of the Downbelow Instructor Team.

Liz has taken on the course and have been working through it with such ease, that Liz is now almost qualified as a PADI Divemaster.

Pro Interns and Staff Says Goodbye to Danish Group 1

March 20th, 2012

Danish Group Send Off

It’s been a busy week on Gaya island here in Kota Kinabalu and both local and international interns were kept busy with big group logistics.

The 18 strong Danish adventure group took part in 16 Open Water and 2 Advanced Open Water courses, 2 Underwater Photography courses and 18 AWARE Coral Reef Conservation courses, while our interns made sure everything ran smoothly.

Resident PADI Course Director Richard and the rest of Downbelow’s professional instructors, ensured the quality and safety of all the courses were maintained at all times.

There’s no rest for the wicked however, as while they waved off the Danish adventurers the group of British uni students arrived for their occupation of Gaya island.

Busy is a good thing though, lots of experience to gain – and that’s exactly what our interns are doing.

More Whalesharks Sighted in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo

March 19th, 2012

Whalesharks sighted in Kota Kinabalu, borneo

None of Downbelow’s staff or professional interns were in on the action this time, but this Sunday passed there were more whalesharks sighted in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo.

Our guests were out on a dive not too far our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre when the encounter occurred.

Luckily the diving guests were equipped with an underwater camera and managed to take a few awesome close-up shots.

Check out the photo album on Facebook of the recent whaleshark sighting right here in Kota Kinabalu.

Course Director Richard vs. Shark Ambassador Finley

March 16th, 2012

Downbelow's resident Course Director Richard Swann (on the left) with the fantastically famous Finley

Our resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann attended the PADI CDTC Celebratory Reception in Kota Kinabalu recently, and bumped into a famous figure.

Project AWARE Shark Ambassadors Finley and Finn made a much anticipated appearance a the ball, and Richard rubbed shoulders with the illuminates for a good part of the night.

And who is this Finn and Finley? I thought you would never ask.

Having traveled together since bumping into each other in the UK during World Oceans day on 8 June, Finn and Finley are the Project AWARE Shark Ambassadors, icons if you would, for the cause of shark awareness.

If you’re still confused, Finley is pictured on the right in the picture above. The one on the left is Richard. Finn was off being chatted up by some young new Course Director and is absent from the picture.

Anyway, they’ve travel the globe in their quest to spread the word on the dire situation their kin is in. An ever increasing appetite for shark fin from the East and by-catch from every other direction, is putting the world’s shark population in serious peril.

Only through action inspired by awareness can we change this tide and it is this awareness which Finn and Finley are promoting as they travel their way around the world.

Why don’t you join the cause and do sharks a favour by befriending the Shark Tour on Project AWARE’s My Ocean? Together – and only together – can we make a difference.

Make a difference.
